Very good product with excellent price/value ratio
This is a *very* good product. I tried a couple of
netbook
s with different sizes but this 10" works best for me. The screen and keyboard are nice and small but still big enough to work with.
I bought this version because I wanted a SSD, not a harddisk. The
linux
distro is kinda limited. I immediately replaced it with XP. Works like a charm!
There are a number of things you have to realize though:
1) in order to install a new OS you'll need an external USB CD
drive
. Although I assume you can also install a new OS with an USB drive
2) you HAVE to buy the 2GB memory upgrade if you want to run XP smoothly on a SSD. Keep in mind that this netbook only supports 2GB, so if you buy the 2GB module you have to replace the 1GB by the 2GB module. You can't install 3GB.
3) Tune your XP system. SSD doesn't work well with lots of harddisk writes. This is probably the reason why this SSD version only ships with Linux (don't know for sure). Disable the paging file, create a 256 MB
ram
drive and set the environmental temp variables to point to this ramdrive. Also, don't forget to tune your browser to use this ramdrive for tempfiles. Google for instructions.
Initially I bought this "gadget" for fun and I intended to buy a new "normal" laptop for day to day work. But after I hooked up an external monitor (1280*1024) keyboard and mouse, I didn't need another laptop at all. It works perfectly well!
At my work there was someone who bought a *very* expensive Sony mini laptop. This
Asus
is just as tiny but much, MUCH cheaper. And it works great!

Solid Performance in a Netbook
I had doubts about whether I would like this computer, but good things can come in small packages.
There is nothing fancy as far as overall performance. If you want a high-powered laptop or a gaming machine, look elsewhere. But, if you want to run simple applications, do office word processing, take notes, or surf the internet this is a very nice little computer.
Out of the box, setup was very swift and easy. I love the
Solid
State
Hard
Drive
s on this model. It has both an 8 GB for the operating system and a 32 GB drive for storing files. If you need more, you can add an SDHC card.
The WiFi connected easily and the included webcam comes bundled with the open-source
Linux
prog
ram
called "Cheese", a rather cheesey version of MAC's Photobooth software.
The only thing I didn't like about the computer is the operating system, Xandros. With most computers, this would be a major score decrement. But, this is Linux!!! No problem. I loaded a new version of Linux known as Ubuntu customized for the
Eee
. It is a free download and a far superior OS in my opinion. Xandros is a good system for people who are uncomfortable with computers; I find it constraining.
If you decide you don't like Ubuntu or mess up the installation beyond all recognition...NO PROBLEM!! The Eee comes with a bundled DVD which allows you to create a boot drive on a USB flash drive and reload the original installation. A tinkerer's delight!!
Overall, the computer was studier than I anticipated. The keyboard is smaller than a full-sized keyboard and the shift key on the right is small and oddly placed, but there are no major complaints. The computer boots quickly and is very quiet with minimal fan noise. Highly Recommended!

Happy with EEE PC
I bough the
EEE
PC
1000
. It comes with
Linux
which I'm unfamiliar with but I'm learning. Struggled a bit to get the mouse sensitivity set. Had a little hick-up with font spacing changing while typing. Later found the answer on a forum that it happens if you press shift and space together. Overall I'm happy with the EEE PC. Has a great
battery
life and is small and light so easy to carry around. I wanted a portable
netbook
and that is what I got.
Side-effects of Xandros may include impatience, irritability, and in some cases, suicide.
Wonderful little machine, exactly what I was looking for, except the terrible Xandros
linux
OS that comes with it. I thought I'd be able to stick it out and try it for a while, but after 5 minutes I was looking into Ubuntu. Unless you're happy with a $500 fisher price toy, plan on installing a different version of linux or any kind of manageable operating system. If you cant do that, then get the
1000
h with windows and save yourself the trouble.
Also, do not fool yourself into thinking this is all you need. If you have a bigger screen and keyboard at home, you will use that, and you should.
Netbook
s are not intended to be your main machine, and should rather function as your travel companion.

Ok, but with a lot to improve
+ easy to use default Xandros system, wireless network working out of the box (though I've replaced it w/ Ubuntu already)
+ pretty OK keyboard and display size
+
battery
feels like it does not end (compared to my notebook..)
- way too NOISY! What's the point of whisper-less SSD when the CPU fan is like a tractor, noisier than both of my other computers together.
- cheap feeling, display cracks when you move it, touchpad buttons a bit too hard.
- 1GB
RAM
.. why not 2? The reflection of it in the price would be insignificant.
- costly: it is not worth the nearly $500 I payed on it.
