Sweet Sixteen and never been kissed
For some reason John Hughes movies always strike a chord with me. Previous to this, I've seen The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, which I think gets funnier/sadder the more you watch it, but
Sixteen
Candles
was one of those films that everyone who watches it, will see themselves in. I remember being sweet sixteen , fancying the most popular guys in school, being ignored, although I didn't have the problem of my family forgetting my birthday.
Molly Ringwald was the darling of the eighties, along with the rest of the Brat Pack at the time, but she seems to have virtually disappeared right now. She seems to be mostly on TV in the US at the moment, and hasn't appeared in a movie in ages. She could have been one of the big Hollywood names, but for some reason, she dropped out of filming Some Kind Of Wonderful, which went to Lea Thomspon, and ended her run of films with John Hughes.
Sixteen Candles is about a 16-year-old girl, who has to go to school on her birthday, knowing her family are too wrapped up in her older sister's wedding to remember their daughter is sweet sixteen. She's mad about one of the most popular guys in school, but instead, gets hassled by a geeky guy, who gets her knickers, so he pretend to his gang that they got up to no good. It's quite predictable, but quite sweet at the same time. Molly Ringwald suited these kinda roles perfectly, and unlike the 'teen' stars of today, she was actually 16 when the film was released.
The best thing about this film were the scene-stealing roles from John & Joan Cusack. Joan was only credited as Geek Girl #1, but manages to steal the few scenes she's in. She wears a head brace thing, and was hilarious trying to drink water from a water fountain. I don't think she has any lines, but hey, she was brilliant!
Sixteen Candles is one movie to be picked up if you want to relive your school days, and feel like the geek one more time. But the geek gets the guy in the end.
