Excellent for the price. Nice upgrade over the TX-SR605.

The Onkyo TX-SR606 is an improved version of the popular Onkyo TX-SR605. The TX-606 features an upgrade to 4 HDMI 1.3a inputs, up from 2 HDMI 1.3 inputs in the TX-SR605. The 606 is loaded with features usually found in much more expensive systems. It can upscale video to 1080i over HDMI. It can decode HD audio sources (Dolby TrueHD, dts HD-MA). I'm very happy with the performance, and its 90 Watts (@ 8 ohms) to all 7 channels is more than enough power for me. It is extremely user friendly, and in my opinion, everything is laid out well. Same goes for the remote. The TX-SR606 comes with a newly designed, easier to use remote. All in all, the 606 is an excellent AV receiver. Good performance. Nice features. Easy to use. Priced right. I give it 5 stars for an entry-level AV receiver.

Big sound - Little Price

Pros:
HD audio
Easy Setup
Four HDMI Inputs
True 7.1
Bi-amping Capability
CEC - Allows for other devices that have CEC to control each other through HDMI

Cons:
No 1080p upscaling, but not necessary.

Summary:
For the money, this is a steal. This is the best deal out there. Sounds great, the 7.1 HD sound coming from my PS3 sounds incredible. This is the easiest system to setup, plug in the mic and follow the directions on the screen. Was looking at the Pioneer 1018 and this one, the price and free 2 day shipping sold me on the Onkyo, plus I already had an Onkyo, so it helped.

Onkyo TX SR606

Just had the Onkyo TX SR606 installed. I had 4 in ceiling speakers installed, a Polk subwoofer, and a polk center channel and it sounds fantastic. I hear no buzzing at all coming from the speaker at any volume level, something that's been reported often. For the price this is must have AV receiver. I recommend it to anyone starting their home theater system.

Very good, with one small exception...

All-in-all, the receiver met my expectations. The setup is straight forward, though the techniques to re-establish the speaker settings is hidden somewhere in the deep, dark bowels of the manual (first time's a snap). The sound is great and even the FM reception, using the supplied wire antennae, worked well.

My complaint is how one configures the second set of speakers. The good news is that the "B" speakers can be set to a different source than the "A" speakers. This is kind of neat if you want one audio source in one room (say where you're watching TV) and another elsewhere (say, listening to FM). The complaint is that the "B" set can only be driven by analog input. So if you're watching TV in one room (via HDMI, for example) and want to catch the sound elsewhere (say, on your deck while you're flipping burgers), you're out of luck. I couldn't say how many would be affected by this, but I was. And I went to lengths to find a receiver that could support multiple speakers so this was a bit disappointing.

The only other negative I can think of is the remote's ability to control other devices, specifically my Scientific Atlanta HD/DVR cable box. Most things work as expected, with the one exception being the inability to bring up the list of recorded shows. The cable's remote has a dedicated "My DVR" button to do this and there doesn't seem to be a way to persuade the Onkyo's remote to do likewise. Otherwise, the remote seems to support the typical cable, DVR, and DVD buttons (including the cables, A, B, C, and D buttons).

If these nuances aren't important to you, go ahead. I bought the receiver on Amazon for about $100 less than in typical retail stores.

Great Product For A Great Price

This Onkyo is a great value! It is powerful (90 watts per channel), clear, and full of the latest features, including:

7.1 decoding for ALL surround sound codecs
Auto Calibration w/ included microphone(easy AND accurate)
4 HDMI inputs and 2 component inputs for 6 total HD hook-ups
HDMI repeater, so the signal does not degrade and cause video drop-outs
Easy to use universal remote

I have had it for a month and I love it. It replaced a 6.1 Denon. I would say the sound is very comparable, but this has WAY more features and costs less! I use it for movies (DVD, Blu Ray, HD-DVD) and gaming (Wii, XBOX 360, PS3)and they all sound awesome. I love the lossless sound (DTS HD MA and Dolby TrueHD). A must buy (I paid $348).
