True page-turners at any age

I never really enjoyed reading as a kid, I was into other things... but when I started one of these books, I couldn't put it down, and usually carried on reading the whole series. I have re-read them several times over my life and they're still some of my favorites.

This is not an epic saga like Harry Potter or Bored of the Rings. Instead it is a very manageable series--the books are short enough to get through, and each of the books stand on their own as exciting and very different stories from each other, still weaving a common thread which comes together toward the end of the series.

This series seems timeless, with present enough settings to feel modern, yet alluding to the arthurian legends in a motif that feels ancient and mystical, all pulling together in a unique approach to the classic battle of good vs evil. The intertwining of present day kids' adventure with the old and magical makes them highly engaging, especially for kids. They influenced me in many ways, and to this day I think of the wise people in my life as "old ones," (the term this series gives to the chosen ones of the 'light' who undertake to keep the powers of the 'dark' in check).

I highly recommend this series. One need not be a fantasy junkie to love these books because they're about regular kids who play a part in a very fantastical adventure. The border between reality and fantasy is nicely blurred by these stories... they certainly captured my imagination, and still do.

Boxed Set

I was very pleased with Amazon for the prompt shipping. The set was one of my grandsons birthday gifts, as he is an avid reader of books. He had heard of the story, so was very happy to receive it. Thanks to other reviewers and Amazon's outline to go by, it was extremely easy to choose this set as a gift.

modern myth, children's epic, stirring fantasy

The Dark Is Rising = The Chronicles of Narnia, only less of that "English garden tale" lightness and more "Tide of Armageddon" feel, with timeless characters and iconic battles. This series is a great read for anyone over ~9 years old, and an extra treat for fans of British mythology and dark fantasy.
Basically, the final chapter of Arthurian legend, in which the recovery of Arthurian relics, and the fate of the world, lies in the hands of children. These children are guided by Merriman, a sort of modern Gandalf/Merlin. They wage desperate battle against the forces of evil, and undertake a quest through the length and breadth of the Island of the Mighty.
With understated drama, no cheap thrills whatsoever, and an "End Times" sort of tone, "The Dark Is Rising" was my first Fantasy standard, and it gets better each time I read it.

Great high adventure for youth

Really a grand adventure story. I can't imagine any 10 to 12 yr old boy not loving these stories. I enjoyed them myself. I plan on reading these to my children, I think they will be fascinated.

Impressive

I have liked this series since I first read it in school. I think it has been underrated, being classified solely as childrens' literature, but, regardless, it has retained its splendor in this new publishing. My only complaint is that the original artwork from the '70's publishings didn't make it in here. Still worth the buy.
