Almost too good to handle

Sometimes I have to turn off this album because it's too just to good to take. The ten year wait was well worth it. The songs are a bit more grown up than the previous albums, as they should be, and aren't quite as accessible as the first two albums. You won't necessarily get up and dance, you may need a few listens of a song before it really seeps into you, but if you've been growing and developing over the ten years since their last release (and, hey, I hope and expect you have) then you're right on par to accept these more sophisticated songs.

The tone is as melancholy as ever, but a bit more cerebral than the previous stuff, with lyrical nuance that will haunt you long after you've turned it off. The content is a bit more abstract and and poetic than cynically romantic. You get the sense that the musicians are more concerned with the current state of the world than their last tryst. And we agree with them.

There is a great range on this record- some songs are just dreamy vocals, some take on sounds that are totally new to the band-stripped down and folksy, and then there's the beat-driven sonic passion where the singular and powerful rhythm overwhelms in a good way.

If you are a fan of Portishead, there's no way you should hesitate to buy this album. If you're only gonna legally purchase one album this year, this should be it, IMHO.

I am a long time fan of Portishead. This is a great album from the first song until the last. Thank you Portishead for continuing on and giving us new material.

El tercero como el primero

Este álbum es un redescubrimirnto de la banda, tan eclectico, tan contemporaneo... no parece que hubiera pasado tanto tiempo desde el ultimo album. Portishead se renueva, se reinventa y GANA.

Great return

This is different from what they used to do, but I would think so considering it's been ten years since their last cd. They have evolved and changed their sound creating an equally good cd as their prior two. I really like it. Couldn't give it five stars though. That takes something remarkable.

Portishead - El tercero

Ya mucho se ha hablado acerca del regreso de Portishead, de su larga ausencia, de su expectativa, así que me limitaré a opinar sobre lo que les escucho. Un exceso de oscuridad (como debe ser), exceso de posproducción (como debe ser), un exceso de miel en la voz (como debe ser) para que cuando te engañe y la pruebes descubras que es hiel (como debe ser), guitarras muy limitadas a lo que deben tocar, ni un rasgueo de más, instrumentos invitados sólo cuando son precisos.
The Rip solita paga la inversión en el album; no se si todavía no le agarro la onda pero la revista R&R dijo que si se tardaron 11 años para componer Machine Gun QUE SE TOME OTROS 11 y hagan otro rolón de ese tamaño (a mi no me impactó tanto); Deep Water con esa tonada y esas voces adicionales es de las que no olvidas al terminar el disco. En resumen y en conjunto, funciona, pero si no conocías el Trip Hop a lo mejor no te entra
