convenient way to deal with wet tea leaves

i have a collection of 2-4 cup tea pots which i use frequently. this is the one i use the most, because it's the most convenient.

since it's microwave safe, i can heat the warming water in the teapot. i like the press action, because i don't have to worry about removing an infuser until i'm ready to wash the teapot. i don't use gunpowder tea, so i have minimal problems with bits in the pot. yes, loose tea does sometimes get stuck in the strainer, but it's not that hard to remove. the shape of the pot keeps any tea leaves from ending up in the cup.

i have put the strainer and the teapot through the dishwasher many many times over the four years i owned my original (i'm ordering a replacement--no matter how good the manufacturer, glass still breaks when dropped in the sink). all the parts look the way they did the day i opened the package.

i highly recommend this teapot.

tea press great for new users and old hands

I love my bodum tea press, so when a friend told me that she enjoys loose tea but never has it because 1. she thought it was complicated to make loose tea and 2. the mess in the teapot, I sent her the 4-cup bodum tea press to try. She found it very easy to use and especially, to clean! You can use a teabag with it too and I think the room in the teapot (as opposed to putting it in a cup) makes the flavour better. Bodum make a smaller, 2-cup press too, which is what I have.

One small problem

This is a pretty good little teapot. Its one flaw has already been noted in other reviews - the holes in the infuser are too big and they let the finer particles of tea through. This has happened to me with three different kinds of tea - Twinings, pretty standard stuff - and it causes a few pieces to get stuck in the holes and forms a little puddle of tea leaf fragments at the bottom of the pot. You can filter these out if they bother you (they bother me a little, since they don't look very nice and tend to get bitter) if you have one of those little doohickeys for making a single cup (like a half a tea ball). Also, as mentioned before, this increases cleaning time.

There is a fairly simple solution to this. The majority of tea escapes the strainer when you pour the water in as intended. This speeds up the brewing because it gives the leaves a good stir before steeping. But since the water is flowing out of the holes, it takes all the tea it can with it. So if you pour the water in first and then set the plastic infuser in afterwards, the water will flow in and nothing will escape.

Still, Bodum should have used a wire or textile mesh instead.

Also, it is kind of weird to have a press design in the first place. It's charming but not exactly that useful. A removable infuser with a lid that fits the top with or without it would do the same thing. Bodum makes a pot like this, and it has a better, mesh-type infuser. But it is also a lot more expensive and it's opaque.

I would recommend looking around more than I did before buying this one. It makes tea, and surprisingly, it keeps it hot for a long time, but it doesn't work precisely as advertised.

Acceptable, but not great

This is a good product for the price, and it will make good tea, but the holes are a little too big, so small particles of tea will filter into the water.

For better results, look at other Bodum products with mesh-like infusers.
