From Another Era...and worthwhile.

Poor Ping! No wonder the little Chinese Duck runs away from home, getting beaten like that. He learns his lesson though - it's better to stay with the little pat on the back rather than face the pot at dinner.

I'm still wondering whether his cousins Traceroute and Netstat had to take their share of beatings, too.

I guess we'll never find out.

Actually, a very enjoyable book, with an excellent cadence and meter. The illustrations are simply yet richly done, and my kids and I thoroughly enjoy our time with little Ping.

Boat Trip on the Yangtze River

I have not read this book since I was in the first grade and I am now 42, however it left a lasting impression on me. Lasting enough for me to travel to China for 3 weeks to see the Yangtze River and see men walking their birds in the park in bamboo cages! I think that it would provide mystery for young readers and encourage them to find out what is going on in other countries and with other cultures. I would highly recommend it!

Grosset & Dunlap edition is very cheaply made

Others have written regarding content; I am simply alerting people that this edition (ISBN 0448421658) was more cheaply made than I expected; the cover is simply folded over (no glue). I doubt it will hold up to much use.

A bit disturbing

I'd have to agree with the reviewer, Gregg Hower, who said he found this book traumatic when it was read to him in his childhood. I haven't gone back and reread it as an adult, but I clearly remember being disturbed by it. It wasn't so much the occurrence of the swat on the duck's behind at the end of the book that bothered me, but rather the fact that he spent most of the book obsessing about it and trying to avoid it, which conveyed to me that being swatted was truly terrible. It was sort of like the situation of an abused child who runs away but ends up going back, because he has nowhere to run to. I realize that may all sound a little farfetched to people who enjoyed the book in their youth, but that was my reaction as a child and is the only reason I remember the book today. Obviously I wasn't scarred by it, but if you read this book to a child, I would strongly recommend discussing it with them afterwards to make sure they were not upset by it.
