Great Race Facts
This was a great book for the child who loves race cars. It was filled with many different levels of content that could be read to or by many different ages of children. This is an excellent series of books!

Good primer on Pullman
I found this book to be a great primer on George Pullman's life, especially when he was younger. However, given the hatred towards him by his employees, I think some of the content needs to be changed as it depicts he that he was loved by all. Good book, though.

Overpriced, Disappointing
Not up to expectations. No real information on the cars themselves, or even captions for the pictures. Printed on dull paper instead of glossy, the whole book just doesn't deliver. Sort of neat pictures, but after 20 minutes you've read the entire book and looked at ...

A classical scholar
I had the honor of taking several classes taught by Dr. Chateauvert at the University of Maryland. I strongly recommend any book that she's authored or contributed to as her insights are always deep and encourage an even deeper exploration of the subject by the ...

Heavy on Racism, Light on Folklore
Based both on its title and on the fact that this book is a publication of the American Folklore Society, I expected to find a collection of first-person reminiscences, perhaps embellished as all effective stories are embellished by their tellers, though retaining ...

More than just the story of the Pullman porters, this volume recounts the saga of Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, first major black labor union to be admitted to the AFL. Organized by A. Phillip Randolph just after the Civil War, the union brought together many freed slaves who had been hired by George Pullman to pamper the passengers in his ...

The first clue is in the title....
This masterfully written novel opens with a terrific scene: the train porter wanders through the cars, picking up the detrius of a long night's travel. He finds a scarf, two raincoats, an umbrella, and a leak in the heating system. Then he finds the corpse and his ...

Evolution of Pullmans
This is a great book to have if you are interested in the history of Pullman cars. While mainly dealing with Pullmans, it also touches on the other makers of sleepers as well. It explains how they started and the different styles and how they changed and evolved ...
